Tournament Tuesdays: Down-n-Dirty Predictions

Like I always say, I am not an expert when it comes to tactics or the meta-game. That said, here are some of my thoughts on what I am expecting to see in the Down –n- Dirty Doubles Tournament.

Hordes.
The bottom line is that the best bang for the points is going to come from armies that can field large numbers of models using the mandatory troop choices. Orks, Tyranids, and Imperial Guard should have the edge here, but both flavors of eldar and daemons could also bring the numbers if built certain ways.

No Necrons.
I would be shocked if anyone brought necrons to this event, simply because at 500 points, that is one lord with an orb and two ten model warrior units. There are no other options.

Nothing with AV 14.
Once meeting the mandatory requirements, it becomes very difficult to field anything that as a 14 for an AV. It is not impossible, DH/WH can do it with stripped down troop choices and a basic inquisitor, but it doesn’t make sense if the player honestly expects to win. (Note: I can easily see someone coming with the sole goal of winning a painting category. In this case, an amazingly painted LR is not outside the realm of possibilities.)

A mismatched team that makes no sense in the fluff but takes advantage of some combination or loophole in the rules.
Since the rules are vague, duplicate 0-1 units seem possible. Two imperial assassins, I can see it happening. I am not complaining, but I learned from my last tournament that not everyone attending thinks the same as me about games at this level. I’ll be curious to see what combos people come up with for this one.

So based on the rules, what do my readers expect to see at the tournament?

  1. I played in a doubles tournament earlier in the year with the same points value. My friend and I took Mech Tau and Mech IG, and finished in the top 20 (out of 50-odd).

We found that a lot of teams used the same army to fill the 1000 points, which is rather against the spirit of the whole thing.

Nob bikers won it. Hordes did not do well.

  2. I am not surprised to read that some teams number crunched and brought what would be the most effective. Kind of a shame, as I agree that it ruins the spirit of the event.

  3. All I got to say is that Orks never lose. It says so in the codex.
