January 2011 Painting Points

We have reached the end of the first month of 2011, so it is time to tally my painting points for 2011. As I write this article, I am realizing that the benefit of the system is not my ability to compare my progress with other bloggers, but to compare myself against prior years and make more realistic plans on what I can accomplish.

January has typically been a good month for me when it comes to getting stuff painted. Over the last few years, I tend to take a vacation for some personal travel and rest, so I have extra time for painting. Using the data collected, I can also see that I tend to attempt a bigger project in February, which usually causes me burnout and a sharp decrease in painting points for the month. Based on that observation, I am going to try and alter my approach and continue to work on individual and small groups of models.

Bronzino – 2 points

Crossbowman - 1 point

Ogre Bellower - 2 points

January 2011 Total – 5 points

Equinox's 2011 Painting Point System

I have been using the painting point system for two years now. It is a great system for casually tracking my progress each month and comparing it against other bloggers. That said, I felt it was time to make a few minor updates to the system for 2011.

For those not familiar with the system, the basics of it are that a participant earns points for each model painted. The number of points earned depends on the size of the model.

Infantry or objective markers*= 1 point
Cavalry, bikes, 40mm Monsters (Ogres, Trolls, Minotaurs, Ogryns, Lictors, etc.), or a display boards** = 2 points
Terrain*** = 3 points
Monster or Dreadnought = 5 points
Vehicle = 10 points
Superheavy vehicle = 20 points
*Objective Markers: Alot of tournaments require that a player brings some kind of custom objective marker. Since these typically need to be painted and converted, I felt that they should earn me a point.
**Display Boards: Depending on the event and the value of having one, I felt building and painting a good display board should be worth something in the system. 2 points for a board seems reasonable.
***Terrain: It only seemed right that I gave terrain a value, especially if I am using one or more of GW's terrain kits.

November 2010 Painting Points

November was a slow month between business trips, holidays and school work. I only completed one model, but that is still something.

The picture above is not the model, but let me just say that it is related to him. Once I work out some technical issues with uploading new pictures (work computer doesn't allow external drives and my wife's computer is R.I.P.), I will get my site updated with what I have been working on over the past few months.

Points Earned in November 2010: 1 Points
Total Points in 2010: 38 Points
Total Points in 2009: 34 Points

April 2010 Painting Points

For April, I am going to stick to my guns and only post stuff as the whole unit is completed. This means that April looks like a dry spell from a painting point perspective. Does this mean that May will be a flood?

Points Earned in April 2010: 1 Points

March 2010 Painting Points

I declare the month of March to be a success. While I found the goals I had set at the start of the month to not work, I accomplished alot of painting during the month. I have made some great strides and am alot closer to finishing my army for the N.I.M.G.C. Vanguard tournament. The nice thing is that what I am counting for March is only a part of what I completed in the month. I actually finished a good portion of the next core unit and some IG, but I want to show them off as a complete unit and not individually, so they will get included in April's total.

Starting this month, I am including my points from the prior year as a point of comparison.

Points Earned in March 2010: 5 Points
Total Points in 2010: 14 Points
Total Points in 2009: 13 Points

Monthly Update: Painting Points

After a very weak June, July was a power month for me. Classes begin again at the end of August, so I expect August to be another good month of painting. After August, I expect my painting time to drop significantly, and thus I will be focusing on single model efforts like vehicles and characters.

Last Month's Total: 24 Points
Points Earned in July: 5 Points
Total Points in 2009: 29 Points

Monthly Update: Painting Points

The month of June was total weak sauce for painting points. Based on my standards for completion, I finished one model in June. Since we are now at the 1/2 point for the year, that means I am 51 points shy of my goal.

Last Month's Total: 23 Points
Points Earned in June: 1 Points
Total Points in 2009: 24 Points

Monthly Update: Painting Points

The month of May went by in a flash. While it feels like I have been painting all month, the actual points earned don't really reflect what I accomplished.

Last Month's Total: 20 Points

Points Earned in May: 3 Points

Total Points in 2009: 23 Points

Next month looks to be a big month for points. I have a number of models that have been in process that should be completed. More exciting is that in June, the first incarnation of the embodiment of the Emerald Eye will be finished.

Monthly Update: Painting Points

So I did a recount of my painting points for everything between Jan 1, 2009 and March 31, 2009. I actually had 13 points rolling into April, two more than what I had posted last month. The sad news for April is the fact that I bit off more than I could chew with the RoW: Paint or Die contest. I got overwhelmed by it and instead of using it as a springboard for painting more, it actually made me not want to paint. I think I just became overwhelmed looking at all of the models in the army. The good news is that in May, I am not going to worry about the contest but continue to work on figures for the Daemonhunters.

So how did I do for the month of April?
1 Ogryn +2 Points

1 DH Sage +1 Point

4 Skeletons +4 Points

Year to date total: 20 Points

My Goal: 75 Points

Lone Pilgrim Painting Points

An inventive system for tracking one's progress painting and compare it with others was posted awhile back on Lone Pilgrim. It is a cool system that is being picked up by some blogs, so I have decided that I will join in the fun.

The basics of the system are that a participant earns points for each model painted. The number of points earned depends on the size of the model.

Infantry = 1 point
Cavalry, bikes, or 40mm Monsters (Ogres, Trolls, Minotaurs, Ogryns, Lictors, etc.)* = 2 points
Monster or Dreadnought = 5 points
Vehicle = 10 points
Superheavy vehicle = 20 points
*Note: I am adding the 40mm monsters to the 2 point row, as I believe they deserve more than a single point, but not as many points as a hive tyrant or dragon.

As of today, I have 11 points for the year. I am setting a personal goal of 75 points for 2009. I am a slow painter, but I expect to work on a few tanks in the coming months, so I think I will hit more than 52 points (which would be all infantry).
