On the Bench: Sly Marbo

This guy was originally going to be my Sly Marbo, but since I am not going to be using that "unit", he is just a member of the next veteran squad.

On the Bench: Veteran Sniper (Veteran Squad Complete!)

The end of the first month and the first official unit for my Imperial Guard army.

Tournament Tuesdays: Time to Retire an Outdated Term

If there is one term that is batted around our community that I wish would be dropped, it is the term GT. The term originated from the formal name that GW called it’s now defunct tournaments. Now it is used by any Indy event that wishes to brand itself as being large or important.

Seriously, what is the official criterion for labeling an event a GT? It seems to be that the event is loaded with to many people and runs a lot longer than it actually needs to run. I am sorry, but just because a tournament has 30 people and took two days to complete does not make the event grand. I do not say this to knock any event, but just to point out that the term is dated and needs to be retired.

Years ago, I pushed to develop a formal labeling system for the indy circuit, something that could be universally adopted and applied. Looking back, it was a waste of time, as the reality is that the good events don’t need generic labels. The good events are known by their name and the effort put behind that name. If you plan on running an event, don’t call it the Whatever-con GT, simply call it the Whatever-con. All a generic term in the name does is set expectations that are usually wrong.

Equinox's Beastmen of the Plains List

I finally got to sit down with the new book and determine if the stuff I modeled was going on Ebay or being kept. The good news is that I got my wish and centigors are a core unit when the centigor special character is purchased. (I dislike that it requires a special character, but I am not going to complain since BoC players that fielded minotaurs as core got the shaft with this book.)

Hero – Wargor w/ razorgor chariot, heavy armour & Everbleed Weapon (259 pts)
Hero – Bray-Shaman w/ Razorgor Chariot (220 pts)
Core – Centigor (5) w/ full cmd, great weapons and Ghorros (325 pts)
Core – Centigor (5) w/ full cmd & great weapons (170 pts)
Core – Centigor (5) w/ full cmd, spears and shields (160 pts)
Core – Centigor (5) w/ full cmd, spears and shields (160 pts)
Core – Tuskgor Chariot (80 pts)
Core – Tuskgor Chariot (80 pts)
Core – Tuskgor Chariot (80 pts)
Core – Hounds (6) (30 pts)
Core – Hounds (6) (30 pts)
Special – Razorgor Chariot (145 pts)
Special – Minotaurs (4) (220 pts)
Rare – Ghorgon (275 pts)

Total - 2234

Tournament Tuesdays: My Final Thought's on Invasion Kenosha II

Now that Invasion Kenosha II is over and I have taken a break, I think it is time to post my final thoughts on the event and share some ideas for next year.

Overall, I was very happy with the results of the event. The crowd was great and the atmosphere really felt like one that was full of joy, happiness and fun. To that end, I measure Invasion Kenosha II to be a success!

Like with everything I do in life, I always ask myself what I could have done better with this even. The first thing I wish I would have done better was stick to the schedule. When the event was over, I ended up running about an hour over from what I expected. I like to keep things on time, and I got hung up a little at points, which caused for some delays. I think I can fix those hang-ups for next year, so it shouldn’t be a problem.

I thought the scenarios and story for this year were good. I wish I would have had time to get more short stories written and published on the site before the event, but I can only do so much. I also wish I would have gotten a prelude scenario finished and posted, but again, I ran out of time. Since this years Invasion is the first part of a series I call “Old Magic”, I will be able to use the scenarios from Invasion Kenosha II as the preludes for next year.

Another point regarding the scenarios that I would like to explore is broader playtesting. This year’s scenarios were playtested by myself and a few others (thanks Paul & Nick). Since my travels are taking me to Scottsdale a lot in 2010, I think I am going to take advantage of the great community out there and playtest a lot more.

One last point regarding scenarios and scoring that I would like to make is a slight change to the scoresheets. Two games were scored wrong during the second round that would have had an impact on the results of the event and winners. In both cases, the scores for each player were written in the wrong corresponding box. To prevent this from happening next year, I will be adding a small box beside each scoring box that the player must initial. I really want to stick to one scoresheet per game, so I am hoping this change will prevent the mistake from happening again.

With regards to food, I really think we could have used more. We had plenty of sodas and water, but the catering was a little lighter than I would have liked. I am also going to look at a different service for next year, as the food was good, but I think I could have done better when it came to quantity versus cost.

The swag bags were a huge win for this year’s Invasion. The surprise by Avatars of War made the opening of Invasion a fun time as people compared figures and traded. The bases from Back-2-Bases-IX were also a huge success. The colored brochure in each tournament pack was great, and people getting one of the best themed bases in the business only made things even better. I am really hopeful that the relationships established with these companies will continue into next year’s Invasion.

The prize support was also top-notch. Again, huge thanks to everyone that provided prizes for the tournament, general raffle, and charity raffle. It was a lot of stuff to give away and I was really glad to give away to the Overall Winner a brand new Skaven army. I was also very excited about the Maow Miniatures as prizes. I had quite a few discussions about the Monster Dice and hope that this translates into them getting a lot of business.

One last change that I will need to make for next year is with regards to the sponsoring of Invasion. I had a few “sponsors” want to participate and make commitments that they did not live up to. While I fully understand on a personal level, as the organizer of the event, I feel it looks bad and not fair to the great sponsors that did step-up and provide timely support for the event. Hopefully some small changes will resolve this problem in the future.

So what does the future hold for Invasion Kenosha III? Let me begin by saying that I am looking at January 15, 2011 as the date for the next Invasion. While this is not official, I can safely say that it is the target date and what I am planning around at this time. With regards to the location of Invasion Kenosha III, my hope and plan is to hold it once again at Rockhead’s. Allen and Laurie are simply the greatest and all of the help they provided meant a lot to me.

As for ideas and changes for next year, I have a few things that are floating around in my head. The current rumor is that 8th edition will be hitting this summer, so how that will impact the event is uncertain. I fully expect the event to still focus on 1000 point, fully painted armies, but there may be a few slight changes based on the new rules. Do not worry, I am not going to make Invasion suddenly 2000 points and painting not required.

Outside of the changes brought about by 8th edition, I am going to explore some ideas during the quiet time. One idea I am considering is called the Triad Competition. The idea is that during check-in, three players can register as a triad, which will cost the team an additional $5.00 total (not per person). Players will still play individually and such, but there will be a set of awards and prizes for the best triad.

Another idea that I am floating is to add an army book score to the scoring system. The idea is that each specific army book has a pool of 10 points. At the start of the event, each pool is divided by the number of players using that specific book. So for example, if only one player uses a specific army book, they would have an additional 10 points added to their overall score. If three players are using the book, each player would receive an additional 3.3 points added to their overall score. The reason for doing this would be to motivate more diversity in the army books used at the next Invasion.

One last thing that I am expecting for the next Invasion is to have enough tables built that the tournament will have a visual theme. This year’s Terrain Contest was kind of a wash, but I have been slowly build for the last few years, so I expect Invasion Kenosha III to be the first year where I can rollout my vision of how I want the tables to look. (Please note, the terrain provided by Rockhead’s is great. I am really just wanting to take the event to the next level and really step-up the theme of each Invasion.)

Before I end this reflection, I want to give some thanks once last time. Thank you to my wife for all of her help getting things prepared. Thank you to my brother for helping to write some of the stories and giving his input on stuff. Thanks to Aaron from Back-2-Base-IX for being the first to step-up and provide support for the swag bags. Thanks to Johanna from AoW for providing the cool surprise and amazing models for the bags. Thanks to Matou for bringing your awesome products to Invasion. Allen, Laurie, Nick, and Rick, thanks for providing all of the help setting-up, breaking down, and just championing this event. Thanks to Eric and WWHFB for providing some amazing prizes for the charity raffle and being a great forum to chat about Invasion. Thank you to Marty and the Old Farts of Warhammer for providing donations in the form of prizes for the charity raffle. Thanks to Robert, Dan, and the guys from Rites of War for setting up a board just for Invasion. Thanks to Tony and the Cheddar Bowl III for donating prizes towards the tournament awards. Lastly, I thank everyone who took the time and money to participate in Invasion Kenosha II. Without you, there is no Invasion!

Again, it has been a pleasure and honor running this year’s Invasion. The support, efforts, and love from the hobby community are what inspire me to make each Invasion special and great. So until next year, keep gaming and painting, for signs will surely appear when the next invasion is coming…

2010 Tyranids: Equinox's First Attempt

As I wrote a few weeks ago, I received a pre-order invoice for the Tyranid codex as a Christmas gift. The book arrived yesterday, so while watching the Ravens fall out of the playoffs (ARGH!), I drew up a list based on what I have assembled and painted.

Hive Tyrant w/ Hive Commander, Psychic Scream, Leech, and 1 Guard (255 pts)
3 Lictors (195 pts)
3 Zoanthropes (180 pts)
10 Genestealers w/ Broodlord (186 pts)
10 Genestealers w/ Broodlord (186 pts)
10 Genestealers w/ Scything Talons & Broodlord w/ Scything Talons (208 pts)
10 Hormagaunts (60 pts)
3 Raveners w/ Rending Claws (105 pts)
Total 1495 pts

I have always loved armies that attack LD and this army can do that by the bucket load. It is not optimized, but it doesn't require me buying anything new either, so it is a personal win for 2010.

When fielding this army, my general approach would be to park everything but the tyrand and zoanthropes in reserve. The first turn will be critical as I will need to protect the tyrant for a turn as it will be a huge target. My hope is that a combination of terrain and a wall of zoanthropes can be an effective shield for a single turn.

Once the 2nd turn has hit, and assuming that my tyrant is alive, I should start cashing in on the reserve roll bonuses. On turn two, the tyrants bonus will come into play, so hopefully I can deploy the lictors and the bulk of everything else. Assuming the lictors hit on two and survive for a turn, I can use the additional reserve bonus on turn three and thus get everything in by the third turn.

Once stuff hits, my hope is the genestealer broods can hit quickly and bring the multiple "Aura of Despairs " into range of the enemy. This should allow for me to win assaults easily and also make the Tyrant's scream more effective.

2010 Imperial Guard List - Redux

Just made a quick change to my Imperial Guard list:

HQ – Company Command Squad w/ vox, 2 snipers, 1 autocannon 75 pts
Troop – Veteran Squad w/ 3 snipers, vox, heavy bolter, and Harker 155 pts
Troop – Veteran Squad w/ 3 snipers, vox, autocannon 100 pts
Fast Attack – Hellhound 130 pts
Heavy Support – 2 Leman Russ Punishers w/ heavy bolter sponsons 400 pts
Heavy Support – 1 Medusa 135 pts

Total 995 pts

The veterans with flamers seemed out of place without a transport, so I am replacing them with sniper rifles, a vox, and an autocannon team.

Tournament Tuesdays: Another Invasion Has Ended.

Last weekend was the second annual Invasion Kenosha. It is a 1000 point WFB tournament I have been running for two years now. Overall it seems like it was a huge success. We collected alot of donations for the local animal shelter and everyone seemed to walk away happy and glad they came.

As of today, I am still in the process of recovering from the event but I wanted to share a couple pictures and outline some future Tournament Tuesday topics I plan on discussing.

In the next couple of weeks, I will give my detailed rundown on how Invasion turned out. I will look at the cost of running an Invasion and finally discuss some future ideas for the event. Until that time, here are some of the 60+ pictures I took from the event. Enjoy!

On the Bench: 2010 Imperial Guard Army List

On Wednesday, I posted my goals for 2010. Today I can roll out my revised version of my 1000 point IG army.

When it came to deciding on this army, three things factored into my army building process.
1. I wanted an army that I could finish in a reasonable amount of time. Based on my painting points for 2009, I can paint about 1 figure every ten days, which is not very fast. This means that a troop heavy army was not a good idea for me if I want to complete this project sooner than later.
2. My original desire was to build a tank army, since none of my other armies have any vehicles. I still like the prison theme and will work towards that as I progress with the army, but for the short term, I am going back to this army being about tanks.
3. My biggest goal for 2010 is to not purchase any new models. With that said, I know that in March GW is going to release a new Basilisk/Medusa kit. I love the idea of the Medusa and want to include one, so I am going to trade-in one of the three Leman Russ Punisher kits I got for Christmas for a Medusa kit. Since I am simply exchanging kits and not buying anything, I don’t feel this is breaking my #1 goal.

So now that I have posted my army list guidelines, it is time to reveal the actual list.

HQ – Company Command Squad w/ vox, 2 snipers, 1 autocannon 75 pts
Troop – Veteran Squad w/ 3 snipers, vox, heavy bolter, and Harker 155 pts
Troop – Veteran Squad w/ 2 flamers, 1 heavy flamer, shotguns 100 pts
Fast Attack – Hellhound 130 pts
Heavy Support – 2 Leman Russ Punishers w/ heavy bolter sponsons 400 pts
Heavy Support – 1 Medusa 135 pts

Total 995 pts

Equinox's 2010 Goals

While I am not a big fan of New Year’s resolutions, I am going to post a few goals in the hopes that they keep me focused and inspired in 2010.

1. My biggest goal for 2010 is to not purchase anything new from GW. This isn’t some kind of protest or such, just a desire to focus on what I already own and not bring more stuff in that just clutters my hobby area. As a side note, I did get for Christmas and my birthday (which happens to be the same day) a card with an invoice for a pre-order trygon and tryanid codex, so while I wont have the models until 2010, I didn’t purchase them, so I don’t feel this breaks my goal.
2. I am not working on anything else until I finish my Imperial Guard army. Ernie has been working hard on his 1/2 of our team army and I want to make sure I live up to my end. Along those lines, I sat done and determined everything IG related I own and can now develop a finalized list since I cannot add anything due to goal #1.
3. Once the Imperial Guard is finished, I plan on finishing the Emerald Eye. I have been chipping away at it for two years and now is the time to get it finished and on the battlefield. I don’t want to do that though until I have completed my IG stuff.

On the Bench: Imperial Guard Heavy Weapons Team

2010 has begun and I have just finished my first model for the year.
